7 Myths About Honey

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

1. Honey never spoils - It will not spoil so easily but it can spoil if you leave it open and air fills in causing fermentation. You do not need to store it in the fridge but if you have been storing it in the fridge ensure you continue to do so, do not leave it out for long periods of time.

2 Honey is less fattening than white sugar - This is what we would call an old wife’s tale, honey is not less fattening then sugar, you have to remember that honey is also sugar based hence once the body consumes it, sugar is sugar at the end of the day.

3 Honey has a small amount of fat and cholesterol - It has no fat nor cholesterol.

4 Honey can turn hairs WHITE - A myth often advocated by the the older generation, honey does not turn hair whiter (scientifically proven) and has been used for thousands of years for not only skin care but hair products due to its moisturising, anti-inflammatory properties.

5 The quality of honey depends on its colour - Each type of honey is different, depending on where it was sourced from and its type hence the colour has no baring on its quality, some are darker and some are lighter.

6 Honey is toxic when placed in hot water - Honey is not toxic when places in hot water but when placed in hot water or mixed in hot water (by this i mean boiling water) it decreases its medicinal values-instead use warm water if you have to.

7 Honey can create well preserved skin and delay anti-aging - It does have values for anti-ageing and preserving skin providing the honey used is in fact raw unprocessed honey.
